You would think in our society Mental Health would no longer be a stigma but sadly, it still is. I personally that Mental Health is just as important as emotional and physical because they all impact each other in different ways. If you're not taking care of yourself mentally, it can affect your physical and emotional health. There is nothing to be ashamed of if you have a Mental Illness but the stigma that surrounds us is why many people don't seek treatment. They face fear, rejection, and shame from others who may deem them as weak, crazy, and unable to handle their emotions.
This is not true. Most people who have a mental illness aren't prone to violence, crazy, unable to handle their emotions but unfortunately we are lumped into that category and this is something that has to change. This is why there is such a stigma and why people believe the mentally are ill are crazy, unstable, and prone to take their anger out on others. This is unacceptable and we as community need to speak and make our voices heard. Society needs to change and understand that we as community function differently and just because we have a mental illness doesn't make us less of a person.
Most people don't seek help because of the stigma that surrounds it. They feel embarrassed, ashamed, guilty, and also feel as though seeking help means that they are weak. This is not true. There is no reason anyone should suffer in silence, we as a society have to do better. We can't make people believe that just because they feel differently than others that they should suffer in silence. Asking for help is one of the most courageous things you can and we as individuals need to be more kind, open minded, and show more compassion for others.
We need to end the stigma.
